Effectiveness in Organizations

What is the force driving a successful organization?

An organization is a unit strategically managed and structured to accomplish a specific task. A management structure is used to differentiate the people and their tasks where parts of the specific task will be divided and distributed to everybody in the organization. People will have different roles, authority, and responsibilities and with their end products combined, the specific task will be finished by the organization.

A successful organization is an organization with a good structural plan, a high rate of commitment and is able to produce a high quality of work. The curiosity behind this is how and what drives the people to produce quality work and contribute to the organization? There are several keys to this question, where factors especially human management must be taken care of to ensure the success of the company.

Motivation is the main driving force of the people to work in an organization, where in order to achieve something; one will be willing to work harder and put in more effort, producing a better product thus increasing effectiveness. The two types of motivations are financial and non-financial- one focusing more on money such as raises in salary and the other one focusing on perks such as free medication or holiday, or even a raise in power.

Leaders play an important role too in an organization, promoting individuals to contribute beyond their roles, increasing the understanding of the task, a leader is the one who leads the organization to where it should be heading. There are several styles of leading- autocratic, democratic and Liazze-Faire.
·         Autocratic involves the leader taking full control, where exact instructions are given out and no suggestions will be accepted, saving the time wasted in decision-making, driving the employees with discipline.
·         Democratic however focuses more in participation, usually used in planning stages, where ideas are collected and decisions are finalized by the leader, where it drives teammate’s motivation with the feeling of being valued.
·         Liazze-Faire is a freedom-based leadership style where employees are to make their own decisions in accomplishing the same goals or visions where it is used in highly expertized teams where they are clear of what they are doing.

Leadership is different from management because unlike management, a leader expands the organization, while the management maintains it. It is the leader’s responsibility to innovate, investigate and create new ideas from the status quo of the organization while the management just accepts it.

Organizational culture, made to create shared beliefs and principles at work, boosting confidence and teamwork between the employees with the similarities in their mind-sets while making them feel appreciated by highlighting their roles in organization.

Different types of organization cultures have its rules and aspects. Power culture mainly focuses on control, where an individual gains full power over the employees. With the majority using the role culture, it involves specification in tasks where individuals focus on their roles, completing the project when in a whole whilst task culture involves individuals working as a team where it motivates employees with the responsibility of their decisions for the group. Person culture is used when the focus is the individual, usually used in charity organizations; it focuses on freedom where you are responsible for your own work.

Structure involves the hierarchy of an organization and the span of control of an individual. A tall structure involves a small span of control but with a number of management levels. A wide structure involves a small number of management levels but a wide span of control.

The tall structure is more suitable with the use of power and role cultures, where the efforts of the subordinates can be identified, and the quality of work will improve due to close supervision. The wide structure satisfies the requirement of task and person cultures where the individual is focused and both involves a leader controlling a large number of subordinates, usually used for saving costs with fewer managers.

Choosing the correct type of people to participate in an organization is crucial for driving a successful organization too. There are a few kinds of people with different reasons for getting a job- basic need, security, social needs and self- satisfaction. The ones working for basic needs are low in motivation, remaining only in their comfort zone and will not be willing to do more whilst self-satisfaction people are high flyers and searches for more achievements, requiring no additional actions on training due to the ability of self- improvement. Therefore, recruiting people which are highly motivated as in a working environment, influences will happen and will drive the organization further into development.

In conclusion, the force driving an organization involves not just only motivation, but a combination of all the factors which involves how the organization is being organized. Like a country, an organization without its people is not an organization. Same goes to a king without his followers. The employees of an organization must not be mistreated or underpay as with a bad driving force, an organization is no good.
