Personal Statement for Job Interview

In recent years, science has made many astounding discoveries which prospered the world with better technology. However, I believe that more can be done in the field of healthcare in neurology science as ageing had caused a large amount of people to get dementia, causing the brain to malfunction. Being a graduate in neuroscience of the International Medical University (IMU) in Malaysia, I wish to be a neurologist in your hospital to fulfill the responsibility of every doctor and to express study in neurological science through your hospital’s research facility.

Knowing that the brain is the most complex organ of the body, it is shocking that the brain is very sensitive where little changes in the activity of the cells will lead to the alteration in the functioning of the brain. Witnessing the effect of Alzheimer since I was small, it had been distressing to watch the person you love deteriorate in front of your very eyes. This is why I set up my mind to become a neurologist to help other people and prevent them from getting the disease as I understand how the patient and their family will feel about it and I will not want them to be through what I've had experienced. Therefore, my life dream is also set which is to find a complete cure for Alzheimer disease to prevent any of this from happening.

Being new to the medical industry, I believe that being in an environment of professionals and experts, I would be able to gain and achieve more knowledge in neuron anatomy due to the exposure of work done by the seniors.  This will help on gaining experience by learning from the other doctors so that I can help my patients by giving them better treatment and more efficient medicines. Also, by doing this, it will be my first step to achieving my previously mentioned life dream.

In order to understand the busy daily work routine of the hospital, while I was getting my medical degree in the university, I had been helping out my uncle, Dr. Koh Wai Keat, who is a doctor in gerontology, during my term breaks in Fatimah Hospital, Ipoh. Being given a place as a trainee nurse of him, I was to follow him around the hospital and assist him in giving medical treatments. Every day the routine was very tight where the doctor always has a line waiting outside and even when there is no patients, the doctor is required to self-study in order to catch-up with the newest medical news. Also, in cases of emergency, the doctor must proceed or transfer other doctors to the emergency room regarding to the case. With that, I've gained familiarity on some of the general medicine used to treat common diseases, the infrastructure of the hospital like how they communicate, how the system works and more.

As you know, gerontology is the field of medicine in the subject of the specialization in elderly and in my 5 years of working as a voluntary trainee nurse, I had been able to communicate with the doctor’s patient. At first, it was awkward where I was a little shy while talking with them. However, after some time, I became familiar with the patients and managed to understand their backgrounds, and even how they feel about their treatment! Through this experience, I can say that I have the ability to socialize with people, understanding them thus making improvements through their comments and also minimizing the confusion of the patients by letting them know their situation better.

Being active in sports is also equally important at being active at work. I captained a basketball team and played at club level, representing the club in competitions and won quite a number of medals.  Being in a team enables me to strengthen my team-building skills as I had to learn how to lead my team into unpredictable situation thus making right decisions to be a leader and a noteworthy team player. Raising awareness for good causes is also something I strive to do as for the past two years, I have been one of the board members of a charity organizations, giving talks, speeches, creating campaigns and also raising money to help the people in need.

I am certain that I had made the right choice of selecting this hospital to work in as I know that being in this hospital will help me reach my career goals and I will be looking forward to face the challenges so that I will be able to contribute to the world.
